Why
You Need a Rheumatologist
Rheumatologists specialize in patients with various types of
diseases, not only arthritis. We are experts in lupus and
Sjogren's syndrome and scleroderma and other autoimmune
disorders. Rheumatologists are also authorities in bone conditions such
as osteoporosis and Paget's disease. Osteoporosis has
reached epidemic levels in the United States, and even today the majority
of patients are undiagnosed and untreated. Many patients suffer from chronic
pain and fatigue. The cause of such symptoms can be baffling.
Rheumatologists have the knowledge and experience to determine whether such
symptoms are due to an autoimmune problem or fibromyalgia or some
other condition. If the diagnosis ends up being an infectious or
metabolic condition, one can then be referred to the appropriate physician.
And of course, rheumatologists are experts in
arthritis. What people don't realize is how many types of arthritis
exist. And often arthritis can be the first warning of another
condition! Some of the more common types of arthritis include osteoarthritis,
rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, reactive
arthritis, gout and ankylosing spondylitis. We now
have fantastically effective treatments for many of these diseases and
nothing could be further from the truth than the old adage that "there
is no cure for arthritis".
You can find a rheumatologist close to where you live
by contacting your local branch of the Arthritis Foundation or your
insurance company. But if you have arthritis, or chronic pain, or are
at risk for osteoporosis, don't delay.
